Dormitory Network

User Instructions

Important Information

To ensure the quality of dormitory network services and assist students in troubleshooting abnormal network issues, please report problems to the **Information Network Section** in person, or email the issue and your contact information to the service mailbox at dormnet@isu.edu.tw. We will assign staff to help resolve the issue.

Dormitory Network Restriction Guidelines

Please read the dormitory network regulations carefully to avoid violations that may result in restricted network services.
This guideline has been prepared to help new students understand the dormitory network restrictions and provide rules for compliance.

Dormitory Network Usage Instructions

  • Users may only use the network IP assigned to their room. If an IP from another room is used, the system will automatically lock access, and the issue will be announced in the Misused IP Blocking Inquiry.
  • Each IP has a daily upload + download traffic limit of 8GB (without Proxy). If the traffic exceeds the limit, the network speed will be restricted (64KB/s) for the rest of the day. The restriction will be lifted the next day. This information will be announced in the Self Traffic Query.
  • Each IP is limited to a specific number of network connections (700 inbound, 700 outbound). If exceeded, network access will be unavailable. Please disconnect for one hour to restore access.
  • Online gaming connections are allowed during weekdays from 12:00 to 24:00 and weekends from 07:00 to 24:00. Only essential services will be available at other times.
  • Using tools or being infected by malware that disrupts other students’ or the floor’s network operations will result in a suspension of network access for at least 7 days. The issue will be announced in the Dorm Network Problem List Inquiry. Dormitory networks do not support the use of Foxy software.

Dormitory Network Issues and Feedback

  • During regular office hours (Monday to Friday, 08:00~17:00), please visit the **Information Network Section**.
  • During nighttime hours (18:30~23:00), please visit the male/female dorm management offices. Dorm network student assistants will provide support.
  • Students can also seek help from peers in the I-Shou University Dormitory Network Discussion Forum.

Dorm Network Student Assistants’ Responsibilities

  • Assist dorm residents with network configuration.
  • Help troubleshoot issues preventing internet access.
  • Inspect computers and provide suggestions. (Dorm network assistants do not provide services such as reinstalling operating systems).
  • If unable to resolve the issue, escalate it to the **Information Network Section**.

Management Guidelines

Approved and published by the President on December 21, 2012

  1. The dormitory network is part of the campus network, primarily intended to support academic purposes. To effectively use and manage the dormitory network, this regulation is established in accordance with the Ministry of Education's Campus Network Usage Guidelines and the Regulations for the Use of Campus Network at I-Shou University.
  2. The dormitory network is mainly for the use of I-Shou University dormitory residents.
  3. The Student Affairs Office provides services to dormitory residents and has established "Dorm Network Student Assistants" to assist with dormitory network setup and simple troubleshooting.
  4. The Dorm Network Student Assistants, under the authorization of the Library and Information Technology Center (hereinafter referred to as the "IT Center"), are authorized to provide the following services:
    1. Test physical network points.
    2. Report issues with network communication equipment.
    3. Provide computer network consulting services.
    4. Assist students in setting up dormitory networks.
    5. Have the right to inspect users' IP, MAC address, and network settings.
    6. If necessary, disconnect certain segments or individual computers from the network to maintain overall network connectivity.
    7. Other services authorized by the IT Center.
  5. All dormitory residents are required to bring their own personal computers, network cards (RJ-45 interface), and a network cable (unshielded twisted pair - UTP).
  6. The use of network resources to transmit threatening, obscene, unfriendly, commercial, offensive, illegal, or materials violating university regulations is prohibited.
  7. Dormitory residents must use the network according to the network position assigned based on the dorm building, floor, and room number. Failure to comply will result in the suspension of network access.
  8. If a personal computer is infected with a virus or maliciously attacks other computers, affecting the entire dormitory network's quality, network access will be suspended.
  9. The management and operation of the student dormitory network are supervised by the IT Center. In case of major violations, the student's network access will be suspended, and the matter will be reported to the university for further action.
  10. Dormitory residents are prohibited from using the dormitory network to transmit large amounts of non-academic, research, or administrative data. The maximum daily data transfer limit is 8GB per day (upload + download). Violations will result in a network speed restriction of 64Kb/s for one day. The IT Center will monitor non-dormitory network area traffic daily to manage network flow.
  11. To comply with the Student Affairs Office's control over dormitory network traffic, the IT Center will restrict online gaming and peer-to-peer software transmissions. The restriction time is from 00:00 to 12:00, Monday to Friday, and from 00:00 to 07:00 on weekends and national holidays.
  12. Other matters not specified in this regulation will follow the "Regulations for the Use of Campus Network at I-Shou University."
  13. This regulation has been approved by the IT Center's administrative meeting, submitted to the President for review, and will take effect on the date of announcement.
